LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Transit Authority of River City is saving a seat on every bus to honor Rosa Parks and her contribution to the civil rights movement during Black History Month.

This week and next week, a sign will be placed in the front seat of each bus commemorating Parks' refusal to give up her seat to a white passenger.

TARC is also celebrating the history of public transit and civil rights with two events at Union Station on West Broadway.

Thursday, the agency held an on-site Black History Month talk. On Feb. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., TARC will host a Black-owned Business Showcase with over a dozen vendors and a food truck.

"I'm proud of TARC for being willing to step out there and being willing to help us celebrate the 100th year of Black History," Dr. Deonte Hollowell, program director of African American Studies at Spalding University, said.

Throughout February, TARC will also highlight local and national Black leaders on social media who have made a positive impact on public transportation.

"Public transit and the civil rights movement share an important history," TARC Executive Director Ozzy Gibson said in a news release. "I'm proud TARC plays a part in celebrating that legacy, supporting our local civil rights icons and the legacy of Rosa Parks."
