LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Animal Services is at a critical point as the shelter is at capacity.

Everywhere you look at LMAS, dogs are taking over. The shelter is at the point where dogs are at risk of euthanasia.

"Some dogs make it out, some dogs don't," LMAS Volunteer Chelsea Yonders said.

Yonders volunteers with dogs like Rusty who has been waiting for his forever home for two months.

"I just like to make their time here as best as possible even if it's just 15 minutes of their day," Yonders said.

The shelter has overflow in crates in the hallway and even have dogs share a kennel because there's just no room.

"Any dog that's been here for 50 days or more should be considered urgent, because of the amount of time they've been here and available for adoption and nobody's come for them," PIO Stephanie Jackson said.

There's at least 16 dogs in that category like Rusty and Uber. There's currently no adoption fees for dogs over 40 pounds.

"It's emotional," LMAS Volunteer Courtney Ferreira said. "Some days are hard. I definitely had a moment last week I was pretty upset about a dog, but we come here for the dogs, so we're doing the best that we can to spend time with them to get to know them."

LMAS is in desperate need of people to foster and adopt in order to save lives.

"We're always looking for what we call a live release," Jackson said. "That is our No. 1 goal.

A lot of pets are at risk and there have been pets that have lost their lives and will never leave the shelter again because of space."

It's a sad reality for them but you can make a difference.

LMAS is open Monday through Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and is closed on Sunday.
