LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Animal Services said its shelter has no open kennels for incoming dogs after nearly 40 strays were brought in over the weekend.
In a Facebook post on Monday, officials said the shelter's current population of dogs has become "urgent" as it continues to be flooded with "stray" dogs.
LMAS is pleading with owners to pick up their animals and keep their microchip information up-to-date. Officials said only nine dogs brought in over the weekend were microchipped.
They're also asking that owners contain their pets, properly restrain them, and make sure fenced-in properties are secured so they don't run off.Â
Officials also ask that pets are tagged with proper IDs that have updated information. The shelter said it has pets who have homes in their care, but phone numbers have been disconnected so they have no way to reach their owners. They also suggest getting your pets spayed and/or neutered.Â
LMAS urges people to put their pets in their will, as many animals show up at the shelter once an owner dies because there is no one to care for it.Â
