LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville business is offering a unique physical and mental wellness experience to help people with holistic rejuvenation.
Louisville Salt Cave has been around for nine years, but Tiffany Nugent purchased the space in July as previous owners decided to close. Nugent is the owner of Salt Wellness, which centers around halotherapy.
She learned the importance of holistic wellness practices after an accident in 2020 left her physically injured and in need of multiple surgeries. She wanted to find ways to reduce inflammation and soothe her mind.
"Halotherapy is great for respiratory health, that's the physical benefit for it," Nugent said. "The halotherapy itself is the process of grinding up through a halo-generator pharmaceutical grade salt. It's 99.9% sodium chloride and it aerosols it into the air into nanoparticles. When you breathe it into your sinuses it gets down into your lungs, it detoxifies the body, it opens up your airways because it removes the inflammation. It also helps to break up the mucus."
Halotherapy is like a dry rinse of sinuses, according to Nugent. She said it can help alleviate symptoms that come along with allergies, asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis and other sinuses illnesses.
"Obviously salt therapy is not a cure for anything, but it does help alleviate symptoms," Nugent said.
The salt cave has five tons of 250 million-year-old Himalayan sea salt, according to Nugent. The cave is used for more than physical benefits.
"It's also great for mindfulness, especially the cave," Nugent said. "It's such a therapeutic peaceful healing environment. You can go in there and shut out the world for 45 minutes and listen to peaceful music or guided meditation."
Salt Wellness also offers red light therapy. It's used for skin-rejuvenation and anti-inflammatory effects.
"It's great for muscle recovery," Nugent said.
