Vintage toy store in southern Indiana bringing collectors together for toy swap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A toy store in southern Indiana that has a little something for everyone is bringing collectors together next weekend.

Tyrant Toys and Collectibles is located at 632 Providence Way in Clarksville. The store has hundreds of different toys, ranging from a large horror collection, GI Joes, Transformers, vintage toys, video games and more.

"I get a lot of people coming in who love to reminisce about what they had as kids," said owner Jason Lathery. "We get a lot of 'wows' and 'oohs and aahs' and things like that because a lot of people come in and haven't seen this for years. It gives them a trip down memory lane."

After setting up at toy conventions and expos, Lathery decided to open up his own toy store two years ago.

"When you start a business, you have to feel your market out," Lathery said. "Keeping track of everything, knowing what's hot, knowing what people want, that's a big thing. You can have a lot of stuff but you want to have things that your customers want."

It took time for the store to build up its inventory, but now Lathery is helping people build up their toy collection.

"One of the biggest rewards is the passion for the business and helping people build their collection," Lathery said. "I like to help people find things they couldn't get as children or they weren't fortunate enough to get them."

The store will host a collectible toy swap meet on Oct. 27 from noon to 3 p.m. People are encouraged to bring GI Joes and other collectible toys to sell or trade with other local vendors and collectors.

There will be space in front of the shop for people to step up on a first-come, first-serve basis. The event is free to attend.

"People can trade, buy, sell," Lathery said. "It will be good to bring people together."

Lathery hopes to host similar events in the spring, summer and fall annually.

Tyrant Toys and Collectibles is open Wednesday through Friday from noon to 6 p.m. It's open Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The store is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
