LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A ribbon cutting ceremony celebrated Silver Creek Township's purchase of Speed Park Monday.

The nearly 8-acre park has been part of the community for more than 100 years. The park in southern Indiana was recently listed for sale, and the future of the green space was uncertain.

Heidelberg Materials, the previous owner of the property, listed it for $410,000. Some residents were concerned the park would become a commercial or residential development.

But Silver Creek Township and trustee Billy Ramser bought the park on a five-year plan to preserve the space at 175 Indiana Avenue near Silver Creek High School.

"It was just the right thing to do to keep it a park to make sure that the people in the community can enjoy it," Ramser said.

People around the park are thankful it will remain in local control.

"To be honest with you I sat and cried," said Virginia Webber, who lives near Speed Park. "I was so excited that the children were going to have a place to play safe and off the streets."

Ramser said he is now looking for community input on activities and events to host at the park.
