Speed Park

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A park in Sellersburg was purchased by Silver Creek Township, trustee Billy Ramser announced Monday.

Speed Park is located near Silver Creek High School at 175 Indiana Ave. According to a news release Monday, the park was recently listed for sale, and the future of the almost 8-acre green space was uncertain. It has been a gathering place for families for more than a century.

Heidelberg Materials, the previous owner of the property, listed it for $410,000. Some residents were concerned the park would become a commercial or residential development, according to a news release.

Ramser led an effort to purchase the park to ensure it would remain a public space for recreation, families and community events.

"Speed Park has been a part of the fabric of our community for over a century," Ramser said in a news release. "It was inconceivable to envision our community without it. We are proud to step in, preserve this park, and invest in the future of our families, our kids, and our neighbors."

What used to be a vibrant park that hosted art shows and events has become neglected. Playground equipment is broken, trash bins are overflowing, and graffiti covers portions of the building.

Plans are set to clean up the park and restore its facilities.

Silver Creek will host a ribbon cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. April 21 at the park.
