SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Bullitt County woman charged with murdering her two young sons in their home last monthĀ appeared in court Monday morning.Ā

Tiffanie Lucas was indicted last week on two counts of murder after police said a neighbor found her two sons — 6-year-old Maurice Baker Jr. and 9-year-old Jayden Howard — shot inside Lucas' home on Bentwood Drive in Bullitt County on Nov. 8.Ā

Both boys were rushed with a police escort to Norton Children's Hospital in downtown Louisville, where they died from their injuries.

During a hearing last month, Bullitt County Detective Richard Beahl shared details from his interview with Lucas after she was taken to the sheriff's office. He said Lucas was in the interview room for three hours.Ā

"I asked Ms. Lucas if she meant to hurt her children," Beahl said on the stand in mid-November. "She indicated that it was an accident."

On Monday morning, Bobbie Baker, Maurice's aunt, was present for this latest court appearance after traveling from out of state. She was also at the court appearance last month.

"I came from Georgia," Baker said. "I found out about this court date Saturday. I got on the highway at 3 o'clock in the morning because I'll be at every court date."

Baker said she's not sure if her family will ever have closure.

"When this is all done and over, a 9-year-old and a 6-year-old lost their life," she said. "They won't ever have the opportunity to finish elementary school ... college and be who they were supposed to be."

Baker said Lucas looked "unemotional" in court.

"She just looks like she doesn't have a care in the world," he said. "I think her sitting in jail for the rest of her life is a cakewalk."

Judge Rodney Burress kept Lucas' $2 million bond in place at the request of Commonwealth's Attorney Bailey Taylor.Ā

"I did not want it to drop because of the heinous nature of the offenses," Taylor said. "I do not believe she needs to be out on bond under any circumstances, and that bond essentially ensures that."Ā

Taylor said Lucas pleaded not guilty to two charges of capital murder Monday. He said punishment if someone is found guilty of such a charge could range from life in prison to life in prison without the possibility of parole to the death penalty.

A trial date won't be set for Lucas until sometime next year.Ā

"The case was set for Jan. 8 for a status hearing to see who will be representing her," Taylor said. "She is represented by the Department of Public Advocacy but they may — or almost certainly are going to — bring in capital crimes branch. So, the next hearing date is set in March for a pre-trial conference. At this point, we'll look into the evidence that's available."

Taylor said the judge will likely "set the trial for a final pre-trial and an actual trial date" during the March pre-trial conference.

Lucas is being held at the Bullitt County Detention Center.Ā
