JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) -- A Jeffersonville home-based day care provider, who has been jailed since June after an infant in her care died in 2022, is now charged with battering a 2-month-old.Â
That's according to a news release from Indiana State Police, which began investigating a complaint reported to the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) in February 2024.
During ISP's investigation, a detective determined the 2-month-old child was in a car seat and crying when picked up by a family member from Brittany Baylor's unlicensed home-based day care on Redhawk Lane.Â
Kelly Rone lives nearby, and had a front row seat to the comings and goings at the house. Rone said like clockwork every morning, parents dropped their kids off at Baylor's day care.
"I know she was watching a lot of babies, actually," said Rone. "You would never know anyone was there, actually."
According to ISP, the family member allegedly noticed the child’s leg was extremely sensitive while changing a diaper. That's when the mom took the child to Norton’s Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
Doctors there found the child had a broken right leg.
A Norton’s Pediatric Protection Specialist subsequently stated the injury was diagnostic of inflicted child physical abuse. After further investigation and interviews with DCS staff, information was submitted to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
An arrest warrant was issued, and Baylor was served with new charges of battery resulting in serious bodily injury and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury while being held at the Clark County Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.Â
"In this case, we had two young infants with tragic results in a relatively short period of time," said Sgt. Carey Huls, with ISP.Â
Two years ago, a child in Baylor's care died. At the time, she told police she tried to give him a bottle when he woke up from a nap. She said he started throwing up and "went limp." He was taken to the hospital and didn't survive. An autopsy found the child's fatal injuries were consistent with assault.
The police investigation took two years, and Baylor was arrested in June of this year for the baby's death.
