LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man was arrested for allegedly driving drunk and hitting and killing a man on Taylorsville Road.

According to Louisville Metro Police spokesperson Aaron Ellis, officers responded to the 2500 block of Taylorsville Road, near Bowman Field, around 9:45 p.m. Sunday for a report of a pedestrian hit.

When they arrived, they found a man who was dead and the suspected driver sitting next to him.

The victim was identified Monday evening by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as Michael Winters, 50.

Investigation revealed that an SUV was driving on Taylorsville Road when they lost control and hit the man, Winters, who was either walking in the roadway or standing on the shoulder, Ellis said.

Paul Heiniger, 33, was driving the SUV. He stopped and remained on the scene until police arrived.

According to the arrest report, Heiniger told the officers he had been drinking at the Shot Bar and had "two Gin and Tonics." There was a strong smell of alcohol coming from him, he couldn't keep his balance and had glossy eyes, police said.

Officers also found 11 marijuana joints on him, he and told officers he "had them to share," according to the citation.

Heiniger is being charged with vehicular homicide under the influence of alcohol and possession of marijuana.

He is due in court at 9 a.m. Monday.

LMPD's Traffic Unit is continuing their investigation.
