LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Gov. Andy Beshear will recognize the accomplishments of a Louisville nonprofit's program that supports children affected by gun violence this week.

Christopher 2X's Game Changers has devoted resources to supporting children impacted by gun violence with the Future Healers program, which is a partnership between the Game Changers, UofL Hospital's Trauma Institute and students at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. The goal of the program is to help Louisville children who have been impacted by violence in their neighborhoods to build a better future.

Future Healers Kiddos Medical program is an educational initiative that introduces children to medicine and science as a way to provide opportunity and learning to build upon their future.

According to a news release, Beshear will visit the program at UofL Hospital in January to highlight the accomplishments of the medical program. The educational initiative has grown from 25 children to now more than 400 children.

"Our partnership is extremely appreciative of Gov. Andy Beshear and his team for taking special notice of our program and our magnificent children," Christopher 2X said in a news release. "The kids in our program are so excited about the opportunity to have fun learning about the health sciences."

Earlier this year, the nonprofit's program released the Future Healers Journey to Wellness Personal Journal. It's a 100-page book that blends fun and learning activities for a unique resource that focuses on wellness and health sciences. University of Louisville School of Medicine students authored the book.

The program for children ages 4-to-13 expanded to Nashville. The Future Healers program are now working with doctors from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and nonprofit Stronger Than My Father to help form The Future is NOW (Non-violent Options Win).

In August, the Future Healers program kicked off its fourth year of instruction in Louisville.

The Future Healers program is also expanding its educational initiative to include information about colon cancer and advocate for colon cancer screening. Dr. Whitney Jones, a gastroenterologist and graduate of University of Louisville School of Medicine, is partnering with the program. The partnership will promote the importance of colon cancer screening and raise awareness, according to 2X.
