Cars on Bardstown Road (generic)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is encouraging people celebrating St. Patrick's Day this weekend to drive sober.

St. Patrick's Day is Friday, March 17. The 50th Ancient Order of Hibernians' St. Patrick's Parade was held in Louisville last Saturday.

According to a news release, KYTC reported 30 crashes around the state related to drunk driving on St. Patrick's Day over the last three years. Those crashes led to 24 injuries and six fatalities.

“Buzzed driving affects more than you,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “One bad decision can literally wreck your life, and the lives of innocent people on the road. If you plan to drink alcohol, please plan for a safe ride home by designating a sober driver.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports one person is killed every 45 minutes in a drunken-driving crash in the U.S. Last year, around 15% of deaths on Kentucky roadways were due to a drunken driver.

“If you have to do something to make yourself OK to drive, you’re not OK to drive,” said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray.  “Impairment begins with one drink. Alcohol impairs your driving skills and hinders your judgment, so don’t wait until you’ve been drinking to find a sober driver.”

KYTC recommends people plan a way home prior to the festivities, use a ride-booking company, call a sober friend or family member or use public transportation if impaired. If a person notices an impaired driver, they can call 911 or Kentucky State Police's toll-free line at 1-800-222-5555.
