LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The brother of an LMPD officer shot while responding to a mass shooting in downtown Louisville opted to not go into law enforcement.
Earlier this month, Oldham County Fiscal Court approved the hiring of Zack Wilt as the county's emergency management director. Zack, the twin brother of Nick, had been a recruit in the LMPD Academy, but an injury sideline him before graduation.
Zack's brother, Nick Wilt, was one of the first officers to respond to the Old National Bank shooting on April 10, his fourth-ever shift with LMPD. He was shot in the head and rushed to UofL Hospital for brain surgery. Wilt was in critical condition for weeks and battled pneumonia.
Zack's hiring passed unanimously by Oldham County Fiscal Court. Emergency management directors typically prepare plans and procedures for emergency responses, coordinating with public safety officials, government leaders and other organizations. Â
Nick is still recovering at home. Zack, Alex Wilt and his mom have been by the officer's side since the shooting changed their lives, learning how to continue with Nick's therapy once he returned home.Â
