LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The family of Louisville Metro Police Officer Nick Wilt said in an update Wednesday that he "continues to show encouraging progress in his recovery journey at home."

Officer Nickolas Wilt was one of the first officers to respond to the Old National Bank shooting on April 10, his fourth-ever shift with LMPD. He was shot in the head and rushed to UofL Hospital for brain surgery. Wilt was in critical condition for weeks and battled pneumonia.

He was released from Frazier Rehabilitation Institute in July to go home nearly four months after the mass shooting.

Wilt's family said, since mid-January, Wilt has been on a therapeutic break. He now engages in "coherent conversations easily" and is able to walk semi-independently with a cane.

"He is now focused on muscle flexibility and endurance to help him regain more effortless mobility and reduce muscle soreness," his family said.

There are also plans for a spinal tap procedure to drain spinal fluid buildup.

The five Old National Bank employees killed in the shooting were: Joshua Barrick, 40, a senior vice president; Deana Eckert, 57, an executive administrative officer; Tommy Elliott, 63, also a senior vice president; Juliana Farmer, 45, a loan analyst; and Jim Tutt Jr., 64, a commercial real estate market executive.
