LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- With 4th of July on Friday, doctors are urging you to be careful when it comes to fireworks.
Dr. Matt Bozeman with UofL Hospital said the safest way to celebrate the 4th is by going to a fireworks show put on by the city.
But if you plan to set off your own, he has the following tips.
- Make sure you have clean, flat ground, that's away from buildings.
- Have one person in charge of setting off fireworks and make sure they're sober.
- Keep a hose nearby.
- Keep an eye on children.
Dr. Bozeman said just last year more than 700 kids were burned with sparklers but he's seen even worse.
"Since 2021, we've treated over 50 inpatients, people injured bad enough with fireworks to be treated as inpatient," Bozeman said. "The majority of those are how you may expect fingers, hands and face type burns including the eyes which can be a big deal but we've actually had fireworks that have penetrated into peoples bodies and exploded and caused severe traumatic injuries."
Doctors said you should go to the hospital if you get burned, have blisters, loss of feeling or severe pain.
