LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Kansas teenager who was seriously injured when a driver hit her and her family in downtown Louisville just had another surgery as she continues her recovery.

Ava Jones, her parents Trey and Amy Jones, and her younger brother were in town for a basketball tournament the evening of July 5, 2022, when they were hit by a car while walking on the sidewalk at the intersection of South 2nd and West Market streets.

The driver, Michael Hurley, was arrested. According to Louisville Metro Police, he told officers he had taken hydrocodone and was "so tired he could not make the turn."

All four were rushed to the hospital. Jones' younger brother was released with just a few bumps and scrapes but the other three suffered serious injuries. They endured multiple surgeries and battled for their lives in the ICU. Ava and Amy suffered from serious head trauma, multiple broken bones and were in comas. Trey later died from his injuries.

Ava and Amy spent months in the hospital in Louisville recovering. They were eventually able to return home to Kansas to continue their journey toward healing.

Monday morning, Amy said in a post on Facebook that Ava had undergone an eye surgery to tighten her tendons and eliminate her double vision. The Jones' are hopeful this will be her last crash-related surgery.

Just days before traveling to Louisville, Ava had committed to play Division I basketball at the University of Iowa. WDRB caught up with the Jones' in July 2023 for an update on their recovery one year after the crash. The freshman athlete said she's worked to come to terms with the fact that the future she pictured for herself on the court may look different than she originally thought. But she found comfort in those she has met and feels she fits in well with her new team and coaches.

The man accused of hitting the family, Michael Hurley, faces murder and assault charges. He's still waiting to go on trial for Trey's death.
